Audio equipped cameras expand the capabilities of the various camera types by allowing monitoring of sound as well as sight. This can be extremely useful in areas such as point of entry, cash registers, teller windows, etc. where visible signs of an event may not always be obvious.
Some of the audio enhanced cameras also support speakers, allowing the camera to become a two-way communication device. While the usefulness of this at gateway points is obvious, it also means that the technology can be used for teleconferencing, distance learning applications, and remote review or supervision.
Although similar technologies may already be in place, the flexibility of the IP camera means that this functionality only needs power and a network connection to operate-allowing events outside a fixed classroom or conference center. Training sessions can effectively be taken to the shop floor or workyard where the actual equipment is, provided there is a means of powering the camera and connecting to the network.
Audio capabilities are available on several of the previously discussed camera types. Audio systems require no specific special setup, although two-way communications do require that the viewer is using a microphone-equipped computer.
